Donath Family

The Donath Residence design, conceptualised in 2020 for a property in Hampstead, Quebec, aimed to provide inclusive access for a family member with reduced mobility while optimising the use of a narrow backyard space. Despite the client's personal reasons for not proceeding with construction, the project presented unique challenges influenced by municipal regulations and the property's elongated layout.

The challenge

The primary challenge revolved around accommodating a family member with reduced mobility while adhering to municipal regulations governing the narrow backyard space. Additionally, integrating essential amenities such as a propane tank and an additional electrical generator posed logistical challenges.

The solution

To address these challenges, we devised a multi-tiered solution, beginning with the creation of a balcony at the same level as the main floor of the house. This balcony featured a lounging area and provided panoramic views of the backyard, equipped with stairs and an outdoor elevator platform for wheelchair access. Below the balcony, a compact area was designated for changing rooms and storage, accessible from the pool level. The next tier included a decent-sized pool, outdoor shower, and enclosed kitchen with a fire pit and lounging area. Finally, the lowest tier comprised a green space tailored for safe and enjoyable outdoor activities for children. To comply with regulations, a fenced enclosure was constructed to house the propane tank and generator, with the tank positioned at a lowered level to meet safety standards.

The achievements

Despite the complex regulatory and client-specific requirements, the Donath Residence project exemplifies innovative design solutions. By integrating diverse outdoor spaces for family members of all ages and addressing mobility concerns with the outdoor elevator, we achieved a harmonious balance between functionality, privacy, and inclusivity. The project's success lies in its ability to transform a constrained outdoor area into a versatile and welcoming environment, tailored to the unique needs of the Donath family.
